Description & Details

For more than fifty years, The Hub has anchored a stretch of Mill Street in Almonte, the historic mill town that today forms part of Mississippi Mills, Ontario. Established in 1974 and registered as a Canadian charity since 1979, The Hub is a not-for-profit thrift retail store run by the Almonte Community Co-ordinators, a volunteer-driven group that has kept the shop going for well over half a century. Rather than answering to a distant head office, the store is a genuinely local operation, staffed largely by community volunteers who sort, price, and display everything that comes through the door.

Donations accepted at The Hub cover a wide range of everyday goods: gently used family fashions and accessories, housewares, books, games, and toys, all of which end up on the sales floor and, increasingly, in an online shop as well. Because the store depends entirely on what the community brings in, donors are asked to keep drop-offs manageable, limited to two bags or boxes per person each day, a policy shaped by health and safety guidelines rather than a lack of interest in what people have to give.

Shoppers can browse the store at 118 Mill Street Tuesday through Saturday, with hours from 9 in the morning until noon and again from 1 until 4 in the afternoon, plus extended hours on Thursday that run until 6 in the evening. Donations follow a similar Monday through Saturday schedule, also split between a morning window from 9 to noon and an afternoon window from 1 to 4. That consistency has made The Hub a dependable stop for both donors clearing out closets and shoppers hunting for an affordable find in downtown Almonte.

What sets The Hub apart is where its money goes. Since its founding, the store has funnelled its proceeds directly back into the community it serves, and in recent years has donated more than seventy five thousand dollars annually to causes that include hospice care, scholarships, and local food banks. That is a substantial sum for a small-town thrift shop to generate, and it reflects both the steady flow of donations from Mississippi Mills residents and the volunteer labour that keeps overhead low enough for so much of each sale to go back out into the community rather than toward operating costs.

For anyone in Almonte, Pakenham, or the wider Mississippi Mills area looking to shop secondhand, donate gently used goods, or simply support a homegrown charitable effort with a long track record, The Hub offers a straightforward way to do all three at once. In short, it is a fifty-plus-year-old Almonte thrift shop that has turned ordinary household donations into tens of thousands of dollars a year for local hospice care, scholarships, and food banks.
