Hoffman’s Barn traces its roots to a strawberry patch. When Roger Hoffman’s family business, Hoffman’s Farm Market, closed in 1990 and the building was sold, Roger built a fifty by one hundred foot pole barn on the same ground where the farm had once grown its strawberries. The market had already begun mixing antiques in with produce and plants in its later years, and when it shut down, a stockpile of that leftover merchandise still needed a home. Roger’s wife Pam suggested opening the new barn on weekends to sell it off. The business started about as small as a business can start, with three tables set up inside a garage door and a modest outdoor display alongside them.
More than three decades later, that humble weekend experiment has grown into what the family now calls the Mid-Hudson Valley’s premier source for antiques and used items. The operation fills the entire pole barn, spills into a rear addition, and spreads across extensive outdoor display areas at 19 Old Farm Road in Red Hook, New York. New merchandise arrives weekly, often daily, and the range on any given visit might include antiques and primitives, dishware and household goods, hardware and architectural salvage, sinks, tubs, doors, records, and books. Because turnover is constant, no two trips to the barn look the same, and longtime customers know to stop back often rather than assume last month’s finds are still on the floor.
The barn is a genuine family operation. Roger Hoffman remains the owner and operator, the friendly face who greets most visitors and draws on decades of local history knowledge while buying and running day to day operations. Pam Hoffman oversees housewares and staffs the sales counter Friday through Sunday, and she is known around the shop for baking especially good chocolate chip cookies. Rounding out the team are W. David Brooks III, who handles furniture repair and refinishing along with social media duties on Fridays and Sundays, and Matthew Peluso, who specializes in phonographs and music boxes while also pitching in on furniture cleaning and store reorganization on Saturdays. Together they keep a rotating inventory organized enough to actually shop rather than simply pile up.
Hoffman’s Barn is open Friday and Saturday from 9 in the morning until 5:30 in the evening and Sunday from 10 until 5, with weekday visits available by appointment through a call to 845-758-5668. The shop both buys and sells, so pickers, downsizers, and estate cleanouts alike have a place to bring items rather than only browse them. On social media the barn also runs a running feature called The Weekly Whatsit, inviting followers to guess the identity or use of an unusual antique object pulled from the floor, a small ritual that has helped build an online following well beyond Dutchess and Columbia County regulars.
