When Emily Seymour and Ben Dorr opened Curator in downtown Rockland on May 24, 2016, they were responding to a gap they had noticed in the midcoast retail scene: there was nowhere in the area to buy well-made menswear without driving well out of town. Both are Maine natives, and they built their shop inside the former Thorndike Creamery space at 383 Main St, a building with its own history in the Rockland business district. Today the store, now known as Curator Consignment, is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., with a phone line at (207) 593-8551 for shoppers who want to check on inventory before making the trip downtown.
The shop’s core strength is its menswear consignment program, which draws from more than 140 individual consignors. Roughly ninety-five percent of what lands on the racks is gently worn, contemporary clothing, while the remaining five percent skews vintage, giving the floor a mix of current styles and older pieces with more character. Women’s clothing rounds out the selection, and staff maintain a rotating staff picks rack that highlights standout finds so shoppers short on time can see the best of what just came in. The store was deliberately designed to avoid the overwhelming, wade-through-everything feel of a typical thrift shop; industrial pipe racks keep the merchandise organized, a library ladder displays belts and accessories above an old workbench, and an ornate 1850s mirror salvaged from a Harlem brownstone gives the fitting area an unexpected bit of history.
Curator’s ambitions have grown well beyond consignment retail alone. The business now also handles estate clean-outs for families working through a relative’s belongings, operates a short-term rental known as Stay at Starr House, and runs a companion online shop called Little Fox. That combination reflects a broader interest in the full life cycle of secondhand goods, from a single consigned jacket to an entire household’s worth of belongings. The shop has also hosted First Friday art walk events with live music, folding itself into Rockland’s monthly gallery-hopping tradition rather than operating as a stand-alone retail stop.
Rockland’s Main Street has become one of the more vibrant small-city downtowns on the Maine coast, anchored by galleries, restaurants, and a working harbor that still supports commercial fishing alongside tourism. Curator sits in the thick of that walkable district, making it an easy addition to an afternoon that might also include a stop at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art or a walk along the harbor. While the store draws plenty of women shoppers too, roughly a tenth of its customer base, often picking up boyfriend jeans or oversized men’s shirts for themselves, its identity remains rooted in solving a specific problem: giving men in the midcoast a real option for quality clothing without a two-hour round trip to Portland.
