Description & Details

The Cayuga ReUse Center is one of two Ithaca-area storefronts run by Finger Lakes ReUse, a nonprofit whose stated mission is building, in its own words, a just, resilient, and waste-free world that values people and resources. This location operates out of the Cayuga Shopping Center at 2309 North Triphammer Road in Ithaca, giving north-side shoppers a reuse option closer to home than the organization’s original Elmira Road center on the other side of the city. Both stores function as general secondhand retailers, stocking furniture, electronics, housewares, and the kind of everyday household goods that would otherwise end up in a landfill, all priced to move quickly and keep inventory turning over.

What distinguishes Finger Lakes ReUse from a typical thrift store is the scope of what happens around the retail floor. The organization runs ReSET, a job training program that connects program participants to local employment while they work within the reuse operation, turning a shopping trip into indirect support for workforce development in Tompkins County. Its eCenter handles electronics sales and parts, giving technically inclined shoppers a source for both working devices and components. The nonprofit also offers deconstruction services, sending trained crews to carefully dismantle structures and salvage usable building materials as an alternative to standard demolition, which keeps everything from doors to cabinetry out of the waste stream and back into circulation through the stores. A weekly volunteer effort called the Fixers Collective meets on Saturdays to repair broken household items, extending the life of goods that might otherwise be discarded and giving community members a hands-on way to get involved beyond donating or shopping.

The Cayuga ReUse Center keeps long, accessible hours, open every day of the week from 10 am to 8 pm, which makes it easy to stop by after work or on a weekend without racing a typical retail closing time. Donation hours run separately, Friday through Monday from 10 am to 4 pm, with the center closed to drop-offs Tuesday through Thursday. Pickup and delivery service is available for both donations coming in and larger purchases going out, a practical option for anyone furnishing an apartment without a truck or clearing out a house that is downsizing.

Beyond the shopping floor, Finger Lakes ReUse maintains an eBay store and a Craigslist presence to move additional inventory that might not fit the physical shelves, and it actively recruits volunteers to support the wider operation. For Ithaca residents, the Cayuga ReUse Center offers a way to furnish a home, find a working laptop, or simply declutter responsibly, all while supporting a local nonprofit whose reach extends into job training and building material salvage rather than stopping at the cash register. The Cayuga ReUse Center is Ithaca’s north-side outpost of Finger Lakes ReUse, turning secondhand furniture, electronics, and household goods into both affordable retail and local job training.
