Description & Details

Tucked into Montreal’s Notre-Dame-de-Grace neighborhood at 5670 Sherbrooke Street West, Encore Books and Records has spent more than two decades building a reputation as one of the city’s go-to spots for used books, vinyl records, CDs, and DVDs. The shop traces its roots back to 2004, when a father and son team, Peter and Sean, began working together to source quality secondhand books and records. For more than nine years before opening a storefront, the pair supplied other retail shops with curated inventory, learning the used-media trade from the supply side before deciding to open their own physical location. When they finally did, Peter’s other son Ryan joined the effort, turning a family side project into a proper neighborhood shop. Since then, Encore has become, in the words of the business itself, a staple of the NDG community, a phrase that captures how thoroughly the store has woven itself into the daily rhythm of the neighborhood. Walk in on any given day and you will find comfortable seating scattered throughout, curated music playing in the background, and shelves organized in a way that rewards both quick browsing and long, unhurried digging. The shop is also an active buyer, not just a seller, describing itself as always on the lookout for high-quality books, records, CDs, DVDs, and other fun things, with hundreds of new arrivals restocking the shelves every single week. That constant turnover means regulars have good reason to stop by often, since the crate of records or shelf of paperbacks that did not have what they wanted last month might well have it this month. In 2014, Encore expanded beyond retail entirely by opening a print and design studio in the store’s basement, a project that produces high-quality reproductions of vintage posters, maps, and advertisements alongside original wall art. That studio work now reaches customers well beyond Montreal, distributed globally through Etsy and other online marketplaces, giving the shop a second identity as a small design and printing business layered on top of its retail storefront. For collectors and casual browsers alike, the combination of a deep, ever-changing selection of used media with an in-house print studio makes Encore something more layered than a typical secondhand shop. NDG itself is one of Montreal’s larger and more residential neighborhoods, home to a mix of longtime Montrealers and students drawn by nearby Concordia and Loyola campuses, and a shop like Encore fits naturally into that kind of community, serving both as a reliable resale destination and as a neighborhood gathering spot. Whether the goal is finding a specific out-of-print title, digging through crates for an overlooked record, or picking up a print reproduction of a vintage advertisement, Encore Books and Records offers a rare combination of retail depth and creative output under one roof. In short, Encore Books and Records is an NDG institution built on buying and selling used books, records, CDs, and DVDs, with an in-house print studio adding original and reproduction artwork to its shelves.
